The ‘European Youth Capital’ is a title awarded to a European city for the period of one year, during which it is given the chance to showcase, through a multi-faceted programme, its youth-related cultural, social, political and economic life and development.
The EYC initiative encourages cities to both continue and expand the implementation of new ideas and innovative projects with regard to the active participation of young people within their society, and seeks to present a role model for the further development of youth policies in other European municipalities.
The EYC initiative aims at strengthening the relationship between the European and local levels, fostering youth participation at the local level by applying common European objectives regarding youth policy. The title aims to demonstrate the complementary nature of European, national and local citizenship, especially regarding youth.
Why does Novi Sad want to become the European Youth Capital?
For Novi Sad and its youth it is simply confirming something that we already are - a part of Europe. Tough decades are behind us and nobody wants to look back, but our reality is making us realise that today's generations are the first ones without wars in decades.
Those above 17 have seen bridges burning, experienced wars, bombing, isolation and not knowing what tomorrow would bring. They were youth that nobody wanted and nobody counted on. Tomorrow brought the year of 2000 with 100 days of Exit festival in Novi Sad when we believed everything would be different–we were hopeful, living to see better days. Tomorrow brought HOPE. For young people it meant being able to enjoy life–travel, meet new people, fall in love, study and live a life full of OPPORTUNITIES. Living life in peace is precious but selfrealisation is what is needed. And young people of Novi Sad and Serbia are “hungry” for it.
Regardless of the difficult reality, there are values we keep, cherish and believe in: tolerance, solidarity, freedom and equality. It is not easy for a wanderlust, and each young person is one, to keep up with the world with such a heavy burden of the past, a pessimist reality and a blurry future. But future is what we make of it-and we want it shiny and bright!
Full of hope and opportunities.
Our recipe for becoming the European Youth Capital 2019 is:
